January Update – Asphodelium Writing

It’s the start of the new year and here’s the first devlog of the year!

After releasing Canvas Menagerie in December, we’re now focused on our otome sequel game Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon and an extended version of our melancholic BL Asphodelium. To better give updates on both of these projects, we’ll be doing 2 devlogs a month. At the middle of the month will be a devlog on Asphodelium (you’re here!) and at the end of the month will be for CWES: Amaranthine Moon.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s take a look at Asphodelium!

Asphodelium’s 1.0 version was released a year ago in January 2024. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it’s a melancholic lite horror boys love visual novel about cults, killing, and killing cults. And being gay.

You can see a preview of the current build here:

The January 2024 release included an entire storyline over 40k words and was considered “complete”. However, a few months later I realized there were more topics and ideas I wanted to explore in the story, and began writing an extended version of the game.

Aster slides into the room like a cat—if I hadn't been watching the door, I wouldn't have noticed him.

Hazel "Where did you learn to sneak around?"

Aster "Hmm? What do you mean?"

Hazel "Like that. You barely made a noise, and the floorboards here aren't exactly new."

Aster "I'm light-footed like that."

Hazel "That's a skill, not a birthright."

Aster "Hmph, so am I a common criminal now?"

Hazel "There's nothing common about you..."

Aster "What was that...?"

Before I notice—he's up against me. Not entirely on my arm, but close enough where I can feel his warmth. The sparkle in his eyes is electrifying. If I stare too long, I'll lose myself in their dazzle. They show no sign of a recently dead man. They're the eyes of someone vibrantly living their life day by day. —I can't help but shirk away as that thought crosses my mind.

Aster "Hmmm......?"

Hazel "......You're dazzling, you know that?"

And now, the extended script has passed 19k words, bringing the total of the game close to 60k! I aim to write at least 6k more for this extended version and possibly more, depending on how long the new ending takes.

This extended version has a new storyline with a new ending as well as new scenes that will play out on both storylines. I hope it’ll give players a new look at Hazel & Aster’s relationship!

To go with the extended version, it’ll have brand new artwork such as several new CGs! The original version of the game only has 3, whereas the extended version will have several more, like this one of Hazel and Aster in the marketplace.

Once this extended version is complete, it will be $9.99 on Steam & itchio and the previous build will be taken down. If you want to play the current version of Asphodelium, it’s available as a demo on Steam & itchio. Also consider wishlisting is on Steam, as it’ll help very much!
